What L x W x H Really Means

Every packaging box has three numbers. Length is the long edge of the opening. Width is the short edge of the opening. Height is the depth from base to top when the box sits with the opening face up. So a box listed as 8 × 6 × 2 has an 8-inch long opening, a 6-inch short opening, and 2 inches of depth.

Never confuse depth with height on a tall bottle box. The opening still sets length and width, and the depth is still the third number no matter how tall the box stands.

Inside vs Outside Dimensions

Inside dimensions are the space the item sits in. Outside dimensions are the size of the flat box wall to wall. For folding cartons the two are within 1/16 in. For corrugated cartons the difference can be 1/4 in each side. Order by inside sizes so your product always fits.

How to Measure Your Product

Lay the item on a flat surface. Measure length at the longest point, width at the widest, and height at the tallest. Add 1/8 in each side for a snug retail carton. Add 1/4 to 1 in per side for a shipping box that needs a pad or wrap.

For odd shapes, measure the tightest bounding box that fully contains the item. A curved bottle still needs a straight rectangular box, so measure to the outer edges of the curve.

Reading a Dieline

A dieline is a flat drawing of the box before it folds. Solid lines are cut edges. Dashed lines are fold creases. The safe zone for print is 1/4 in inside every fold. The bleed is 1/8 in past every cut edge. Ask for a free dieline before you print art.
